After a lengthy hiatus SET ON END reappeared in 2016 with a new line-up, and an album out on formidable American label Artery Recordings.
Originally formed in 2005 SET ON END played their live debut in 2009 and released their Means to an End E.P. before touring solidly and supporting a number of internationals. The band quickly entrenched themselves as a notable example of NZ metal before going on hiatus that same year to work on their “creative direction”.
Five long years later in 2014 Jesse and the two Matts reemerged. SET ON END boasted renewed energy and new members; Gerry Dunn – a fierce guitarist and audio engineering graduate, and Jeremy Suckling – renowned by many for his staunch and blistering drumming prowess in Dawn of Azazel and Molest the Episcopate. SET ON END were back with serious intent.
Two short years later in May 2016 the band proudly announced signing to Artery Recordings of Sacramento, California, who simultaneously announced The Dark Beyond LP, and unveiled the first track ‘Dissent’ in the form of a music video (below). This signing saw the Progressive Metal band from Auckland, New Zealand, become labelmates with giants like I Declare War, Entheos, iwrestledabearonce, Chelsea Grin, and many others with huge global attention.
In July 2016 The Dark Beyond was released, the hype was ferocious, rave reviews appeared in prominent metal publications Hysteria and Metal Hammer, and SET ON END garnered new fans from around the globe.
The album is said to be an evolution of the heavy, groove-oriented core that is the band’s signature sound. It was recorded between their own studio, Mindset, and Zorran Mendonsa Productions in Auckland, mixed and engineered by Zorran Mendonsa (New Way Home, Saving Grace) and mastered by Ermin Hamidovic (Periphery, Plini) at Systematic Productions in Melbourne.
The band comments: “The album explores humanity’s journey as a species and as individuals, striving for a better world, striving to further our knowledge of who and where we are. Sometimes the path we should take is obvious, and at other times we simply wander into the dark, reaching out for the unknown.”
In Australia and New Zealand it was also released in the form of an exclusive custom 4gb USB card which includes album artwork and multiple file formats: ACC, FLAC, MP3, M4A and WAV.
Around the same time SET ON END were also featured on an 18-track Artery Recordings label compilation which is still available to download for free.
